MoodSwings Instructions

Introduction

MoodSwings is a collaborative game that incorporates your subjective judgements of the emotional content of music. You are partnered with another player anonymously across the internet, and the goal of the game is for you and your co-player to agree on the mood of a short music clip. You make your ratings by moving your cursor on the game board:

On the gameboard, emotions are described using two dimensions:

Valence: Is the song happy or sad? Intensity: Is the song energetic or calm?

How to Play

Once you are paired with a partner, the game will begin once the countdown reaches zero. The game board will be inactive until the game begins.

When the initial timer reaches zero, the game board will activate, the music will begin playing, and the game will begin.

Labeling the Mood

As you listen to the song, move your cursor to the location that best describes the current emotion of the song. If the mood of the song changes, you should move your cursor to the location corresponding to the new mood.

Maximizing your points

Throughout the game you will see a red cursor flash every three seconds. That cursor corresponds to your partner's last position. You and your partner are listening to the exact same clip at the exact same time. In order to maximize your points, you and your partner should attempt to agree on the best label for the song.

Your Score is based on the distance between you and your partner. The closer you and your partner agree, the more points you will recieve.
